Jane Street is hiring "rigorously" to maintain "intellectual density"

Electronic trading firm Jane Street is the talk of the town, for good reasons (like its $10bn trading haul in Q2 last year) and for bad (like its alleged involvement in the crash of TerraUSD). The firm's headcount has ballooned, putting more eyes on it than ever, but CTO Ron Minsky doesn't expect the growth to be too wild going forward.

Speaking on his podcast, Signals and Threads, Minsky said the firm has grown by 10-30% in each of the last few years and said "when we’ve been on the upper range of that, we’re like, wow, this is really uncomfortable." Jane Street had just under 3,000 staff at the end of 2024 and (according to LinkedIn) had around 3,300 at the end of 2025. Last year was presumably a comfortable year for hiring.

Minsky said that Jane Street doesn't want to grow too fast so that it can "take the time to absorb people into the organization." It's also about taking the time to hire the right people in the first place. Minsky said Jane Street is "very rigorous about hiring" and wants to bring in people who are both technically proficient, and "nice and humble." Jane Street wants people who "aren’t made super uncomfortable about being wrong because we’re all wrong a lot." Minsky also said that not-so-nice hires who make work less fun for everyone else "lowers the intellectual density."

Jane Street doesn't tend to hire many experienced candidates for its trading and engineering roles, instead preferring campus recruiting. Minsky said Jane Street's lack of formal titles is a significant barrier to entry for many of these experienced candidates but that the firm will make exceptions for elite talent; he said Jane Street will be "more intentional about trying to get them into the right spot and make sure that people quickly realize... this actually is a person who’s substantively worth including and listening to."

While you shouldn't be mean if you want to work at Jane Street, you don't have to be outgoing and collaborative to thrive either. Minsky said individual contributors who are "super good at their job and not built to be large scale leaders can still be enormously valuable and enormously well paid." Jane Street paid $1.4m on average to its staff in 2024 and appeared to pay upwards of $2m per head to staff last year.
